Why You Should Build A Family Office Database

Why You Should Build A Family Office Database

Having a database of global family offices is a highly useful tool and asset. Single and multi Family Offices are increasingly active and prominent via their investments across assets, sectors and geographies. Knowing who the key ones are across the globe is a must if you're a fundraiser. (Note, it's equally important for investors to know who these family office are as they could become your co-investors some day or end up acquiring assets from you.)

Putting together such a list, however, is no easy feat, for there are varying levels of information available for each of those families. One Family Office may have a website with plenty of info on what they do, how they invest and their source of wealth. Another, may only have a single page site with an address and telephone number. And some may have no web presence whatsoever.

Having said that, it is very much worth the effort to spend time building such a database and to use it, among other things, to develop ties with those family offices you believe you can build long term relationships with. The fact that many families go to great lengths to avoid the spotlight means that, as a fundraiser, if you're able to break in and get to know them it can giver you a strong professional advantage.

Remember, such a database is a 'live' and 'organic' document. It evolves as you carry out further research on, and interact with, those family offices. And as you learn more about them and add new information / data to your database then that file, in turn, becomes ever more valuable.

Further below is an example (i.e. snapshot) of how you may choose to create such a database.
